Short Biography of Digital Watermarking

Name: Digital Watermarking
Invention: First related publications date back to 1979. However, it was only in 1990 that it gained a large international interest.
Definition: Imperceptible insertion of information into multimedia data.
Concept: Insertion of information, such as a number or text, into the multimedia data through slight modification of the data.
Requirements: Imperceptible. Robust or fragile, depending on application.
Applications: Copyright protection, labelling, monitoring, tamper proofing, conditional access.
Commercial potential: Unsure. Although many watermarking companies exist, none of them seem profitable for the moment (status August 2001).
