[WM]: Questions about image watermarking

Greetings,

I am quite new to watermarking and I hope I may ask some questions in this mailing-list. I am interested in image watermarking for
JPEG files in DCT domain.
What I would like to know is:

1. What is the difference between JPEG and bitmap watermarking in DCT domain? Will bitmap files with same image size and quality can
contain more watermark data?
2. JPEG encoding algorithm is proprietary. Do I need to use (and pay for) those algorithm to insert watermark in JPEG files?
