When a database of images is used as test source material for a research project, it is important to know how many images are in the
database, their resolution, color representation, and color depth, how they were digitized (digital photos or scanned), what
processing has been done, are they compressed (if so, how). There are probably a host of other important issues. Someone should
put together a FAQ.
The goal of using a large number of images rather than a single image is to predict how an approach would work in "the real world"
with real images. It is important to understand to what extent the database of test images represents the distribution of real
images. This is context and application dependent. For example, the images in the database you've pointed out wouldn't be
appropriate for a watermarking technique targeting x-ray imagery or ultrasound imagery or animation, etc. The images are all
compressed, so it might not be representative for an application that adds authentication marks during the acquisition process. By
fully describing the images in the database, researchers can select the appropriate database for their context.
