What I found helpful is MPEG's SQAM (Sound Quality Assessment Materials):

Regarding your ps. question, in my personal opinion, silence is not watermarkable, because any perceptible sound above masking is a
noticeable distortion, and anything below masking can be just erased by attackers with no penalty.
