I don't believe software watermarking is needed to ensure a program has not been tampered with and has been produced by a trusted
source. Hashing techniques, such as MD5, seem to fulfill this role.
Software watermarking tends to deal with copyright protection of programs. A good introduction to software watermarking is
"On the limits of software watermarking" by Collberg.
