Dear chris
It is a wonderful idea to use the real part
 or to use half the values of the magnitude spectrum.
But you forgot that you this duality is beneficial for

robust watermarks , if the image is exposed to signal
processing operarations , so you will use two values
not one value 
     I think you are working at Harris company.
