hi Samuel,
  what i think you are talking about is the shift in
the frequency components as the fourier transform is
periodic and after you take the fourier transform 
you should make a shift (fftshift) and after that you
do not need to leave the first row and first column
  and this is equivalent to what you are saying.
                    if you are familiar with Matlab
 you can try the command fftshift and try your method
to see if they are equivalent.
